Angus is one of Scotland’s oldest historic regions, with evidence of human settlement stretching back over 5,000 years. The landscape of fertile farmland, rivers and coastal cliffs has attracted communities since prehistoric times, leaving behind ancient burial cairns, Pictish stones, medieval abbeys and historic castles.

Long before castles and towns existed, early farming communities lived throughout Angus. Archaeological discoveries show that people were farming and building settlements here during the Neolithic and Bronze Age (roughly 3000–1000 BC).

One of the most significant local sites is Guthrie Hill Cairn, a Bronze Age burial monument, likely constructed around 2000–2500 BC.

During the early medieval period (around 300–900 AD), Angus was part of the kingdom of the Picts.

The Picts left behind remarkable carved stones across the region. Some of the finest examples can be seen at Forfar's Meffan Museum & Art Gallery and at several historic sites throughout Angus.

Today the Lunan Valley remains a peaceful agricultural landscape, much as it has been for centuries. Visitors can explore quiet country roads, historic farms, wildlife-rich wetlands, and the spectacular sands of Lunan Bay. Hidden among the fields and hills are reminders of thousands of years of history, from ancient cairns like Guthrie Hill to medieval abbeys and fishing villages along the coast.

Nestled on the edge of the Cairngorms National Park, the beautiful mountain valleys of the Angus Glens offer a dramatic yet peaceful countryside escape, providing an idyllic setting for hiking, cycling, wildlife spotting, and scenic drives.

Stretching for over two miles of pristine golden sand beneath the dramatic ruins of Red Castle, Lunan Bay is widely renowned as one of Scotland's finest beaches; a tranquil coastal haven perfect for long walks, spectacular sunrise or sunset views, wildlife spotting, and photography.
